2022/23 Speech Day

Speech Day is a tradition at Harrow Schools. On this day, the Headmaster recognizes students who have excelled during the academic year.

Speech Day has a history of over 200 years at Harrow School. On this day, the entire school community gathers for this solemn ceremony. The Principal gives a speech and recognizes outstanding students, and the school orchestra and band perform during this ceremony.

This is the second time that AISL Harrow Nanning has held a Speech Day, and the solemnity of Speech Day enhances the pride of Harrovians, whose values and spiritual heritage have been passed down through time and space and binds all Harrovians around the world together. Harrow’s Speech Day in Nanning is both traditional and unique. All teachers are dressed in their academic gowns, as if the school has become Gryffindor in Harry Potter.

On this “Speech Day,” musicians from the Guangxi Symphony Orchestra also graced our school, performing exquisite classical symphonies for all the teachers, students, and parents. With the melodious symphonic compositions, the Speech Day for the year 2023 commenced.

Mr Neil Clayton, the Headmaster, delicately narrated the stories of “Cotton” and “Zen.” Student representatives delivered speeches on “Courage,” “Humility,” “Honour,” and “Fellowship.” Through a year of learning and growth, they have acquired a deeper understanding of Harrow’s four core values.

Each award certificate testifies to the progress and achievements of students in the past academic year, and the efforts and sweat of each of them have been honored and proved here.

When students’ names were read out, the students who won the award came up to the stage and tapped the brim of their Harrow hats with their index fingers to give the Harrow “Capping” to the teachers.

In addition to the Chinese language award, various awards at Harrow Nanning are named after alumni who were used to study at Harrow and made significant contributions in diverse fields worldwide. We aspire to take them as our role models, upholding their legacy, staying true to our original aspirations, and continually striving for self-improvement to become leaders in the future world. Here, in this year, congratulations to every student, whether they receive an award or not. By giving their utmost and achieving comprehensive development in various fields, they have already made great progress.

Traveling through a century of time and space, let us witness the extraordinary moments of Harrow students together!

Amidst applause and laughter, the 2023 Harrow Nanning Speech Day comes to a close. Courage is about braving the winds and waves, forging ahead without hesitation; honour is about integrating knowledge and action, striving for excellence; humility is about prioritizing others over oneself, embracing diversity; felloship is about advancing together, achieving mutual success. Excellence is not the destination but rather a journey. It weaves through our entire lives, a journey filled with passion, perseverance, and unwavering dedication. When you receive recognition, always remind yourself of the heights you can reach and the boundless potential that resides within each individual. Once again, congratulations to all students on the progress made throughout this year!
